Dear Property Investor,
There is an ancient Greek Parable called “The Fox and the Hedgehog”.
Following the simple message in this short fable has allowed me to financially retire at the tender age of 38 – while I am still young enough to enjoy it.
Today, I am going to share this fable with you so that you can learn this secret to creating real wealth through property investing.
I first read this fable by Dr. Jim Collins in his famous business masterpiece, “Good to Great’,” and will share his retelling of it with you.
As you read it, try work out which one you are – a Fox or a Hedgehog Investor!
“The Fox Knows Many Things - The Hedgehog Knows Just One Big Thing”
“Day in and day out, the fox circles around the hedgehog’s den, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce,” Collins writes.
“Fast, sleek, beautiful, fleet of foot and crafty – the fox looks like the sure winner. The hedgehog, on the other hand, is a dowdier creature, looking like a genetic mix-up between a porcupine and a small armadillo. He waddles along, going about his simple day, searching for lunch and taking care of his home.
“The fox waits in cunning silence at the juncture in the trail. The hedgehog, minding his own business, wanders right into the path of the fox.
“’Aha! I’ve got you now!’ thinks the fox. He leaps out, bounding across the ground, lightening fast. The little hedgehog, sensing danger, looks up and thinks, ‘Here we go again; will he ever learn?’
“Rolling up into a perfect little ball, the hedgehog becomes a sphere of sharp spokes, pointing outward in all directions. The fox, founding toward his prey, sees the hedgehog defence and calls off the attack.
“Retreating back to the forest, the fox begins to calculate a new line of attack.
“Each day, some version of this battle between the hedgehog and the fox takes place, and despite the greater cunning of the fox, the hedgehog always wins.”
Essentially, this story illustrates the different ways in which we view and interact with our world. Foxes have a scattered, continually evolving approach, and they become a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none.
Hedgehogs are able to simplify our complex world into a single, organising idea – in Collins’ words, they can “see what is essential, and ignore the rest”.
They learn how to do one thing, and do it very well. And honestly – this is exactly what I have done with my property investing. I found one simple approach that works a treat – and followed it to financial freedom.
